Awards, one after another!

As a result of 12 months hard work led by a small group of four, The Diabetes Awareness Day held on the 6th June at the Guildhall, Guildford was such a success that it won a major award.  As chair of the group, Pat Millar was awarded the title of 'Community Hero' for the month of June.in the local paper, The Surrey Advertiser.   The group also won £250 donated by a local company, Sanofi Aventis.

In the light of our success, the Area Office of Diabetes UK put us forward for the Diabetes UK communication award for 2009. This was against countrywide opposition. Once again we were successful, and Pat Millar and his wife Daphne travelled to Manchester to accept the award at the Volunteers Conference. It just shows what can be done if you really try.

Diabetes Awareness Day

Went the day well?  Yes, indeed!.  The Group's Diabetes Awareness Day was held on Saturday 6th June at the Guildhall, Guildford.   About 230 people were tested and there were some significant results for a few. And hundreds came in for information or to look at the stands.  Staff from the CEDAR Centre at the Royal Surrey County Hospital and from the Primary Care Trust were on hand - there were Specialist Diabetes Nurses doing the testing, dieticians and podiatrists and an eye screening unit as well as a Diabetes UK stand handing out lots of leaflets.

The Town Crier did his cry in the High Street and the event was opened by Peter Gordon of Eagle radio, Anne Milton, MP and Councillor Pauline Searle, the Mayor of Guildford..

And there was a street collection which raised over £550.

.

The event was publicised in the Surrey Advertiser and on Eagle Radio and directly to lcoal businesses, and it seems all the effort was worthwhile.  Many thanks to our sponsors, Specsavers, Roche, NovoNordisk and Boehringer Ingelheim, and also to Guildford Borough Council and the staff at the Guildhall who were all very helpful..  .
